Poodle dog's History:

Many people believe that the poodle originated in France, but it probably originated from Asia as a curly coated race and entered Europe with shepherds. The poodle is a master shepherd hunter and loves to swim. A curly coat conducts it with cold water and they are duck hunters.

It was in Germany that the race developed into what we recognize today. They were used as military dogs, guide dogs and circus. The French loved poodles, which were loved by 'fashionable women' and became the national race of France.

Breeders will choose the youngest 'stock' to produce small offspring - small and top puddles born. The toy is the smallest of 3 groups.

Their coats rarely come out and are classified as hypoallergenic breeds, but it needs regular attention to make the coat look good. They will need to meet the groomers every 6 weeks or so, as well as to brush a few times a week to remove the skin that is clinging to the surrounding coat. For the 'Classic Pompom' kit, grooming is more intense. Blindness, epilepsy and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) are more common in puddles.
